How New Chase Condominiums was built
The street names here pair a British place with a piece of landscape. Aberdene Mountain and Atherton Mountain, Brighton River and Sylvan River, then plain Creek and Watershed. Sylvan comes from the Latin silva, meaning of the woods. There are 175 homes on four and a half acres, mostly two bedrooms, and the building ran from 1983 with later work as recent as 2009.
Watershed is a slightly wry name for this ground. Fountain Valley sits on the low flat where the Santa Ana River spreads out before the sea, and it was known for peat, willows and water that came up under its own pressure when a pipe was driven a short way in. Settlers called the marsh below Santa Ana Gospel Swamp and the thickets to the west the Willows, where cattle got lost and fugitives hid.
