            History

How Heil Park Condominiums was built

Twenty three homes on a single acre fronting Heil Avenue, built in 1993, mostly two bedrooms. This is about as small as a mapped community gets in Fountain Valley, and the date explains why: by 1993 the city had been built out for more than a decade, and what was left to build on was a lot at a time.

Heil Avenue itself carries the name of one of the farming families who held this flat before the tracts. So do most of the roads a resident here drives every day, and so do the schools. Roch Courreges came from Basque landowners, left for California alone at sixteen in 1867, tried the gold country and failed, then started a sheep ranch in 1878 on eighty acres known as The Bluffs, marrying Magdalena Mogart in 1880 and turning the sheep run into a farm. The tank house his family built in 1898 is the oldest structure in the city and was moved from Talbert Avenue to Heritage Park in one piece.
