A 38 acre neighborhood in eastern Buena Park named for its planets, built in two waves twenty three years apart.

            Overview

            About Planetary Tract

Lots run to a median of 0.183 acres, among the largest in this guide, and the city zones 28.6 acres for 6,000 square foot one family residential lots.

Ten streets serve the neighborhood and eight are named for what is overhead: Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Venus, Polaris and Galaxy, with Planetary Drive itself and Dale Street completing the set. Mail carries the 90620 zip code, and the neighborhood feeds Glen H. Dysinger Sr. Elementary, Dale Junior High and Savanna High.

            History

            How Planetary Tract was built

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Polaris, Galaxy and Planetary itself. This is a space race neighborhood, and the street index dates it almost as precisely as a cornerstone would. Polaris is the pole star and also the missile the United States Navy first fired from a submarine in 1960; Mercury was the name on the first American manned spaceflight program. Nobody was naming suburban streets after planets before Sputnik, and few were still doing it after the moon landings.

About 158 homes sit on 38 acres here, on lots near a fifth of an acre, which is roomier than most of the city. Dale Street runs along one edge. The layout is the standard Southern California pattern of the period, single story houses on wide curving blocks with the garage facing the street.

            Common questions about Planetary Tract

            How big is Planetary Tract?

Measured against the boundary the City of Buena Park publishes, Planetary Tract covers 38.1 acres. The city's address layer records 158 addresses inside it across 158 parcels, one address to each lot.

            When was Planetary Tract built?

In two waves. Tract 2634 was recorded on 24 April 1958 by Herbert W. Phillips and carries 102 lots; Tract 11212 was recorded on 2 February 1981 by Boyer Engineering with Delbert D. Boyer signing, and carries 54. The county assessor dates 102 homes to the 1950s and 54 to the 1980s, with nothing in between.

Why are the streets named the way they are?

Eight of the ten street names on the city's own centerline layer are astronomical: Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Venus, Polaris and Galaxy. Planetary Drive and Dale Street are the other two.

            What are the lots like?

Larger than most. The city's parcel register puts the median lot at 0.183 acres, which is among the largest of the twenty eight neighborhoods in this guide, and zones 28.6 of the 38.1 acres for 6,000 square foot one family residential lots.

Those are the campuses the districts' own attendance boundaries put this community in. Assignment can change with a boundary review, so confirm the campus for a specific address with the district.
