How Planetary Tract was built
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Polaris, Galaxy and Planetary itself. This is a space race neighborhood, and the street index dates it almost as precisely as a cornerstone would. Polaris is the pole star and also the missile the United States Navy first fired from a submarine in 1960; Mercury was the name on the first American manned spaceflight program. Nobody was naming suburban streets after planets before Sputnik, and few were still doing it after the moon landings.
About 158 homes sit on 38 acres here, on lots near a fifth of an acre, which is roomier than most of the city. Dale Street runs along one edge. The layout is the standard Southern California pattern of the period, single story houses on wide curving blocks with the garage facing the street.
