            History

            How Cantobrio I was built

Cantobrio I is one of the oldest pieces of Rancho Santa Margarita, with homes dating to the mid 1980s, in and around the year the city's own history gives as the start of everything: 1986, when the first homes in the master planned community were sold. Everything under it had been one property for a century. James Flood and Jerome O'Neill bought the combined ranchos in 1882, the holdings were split in 1940, and in 1942 the southern half went to the government for Camp Pendleton, which is how the O'Neills ended up concentrating on this plain.

The name echoes Cantabria on Spain's northern coast, but the streets go their own way into the plant world. Sarracenia is the pitcher plant, Santolina the cotton lavender, Calendula the marigold, Camellia the ornamental shrub and Madrona the red barked madrone that grows on the western slopes. It is a small single family pocket, under one hundred and twenty addresses across a little under nineteen acres, and it was here before most of the city around it.
