How Las Flores I was built
Las Flores means the flowers and the streets do exactly what the name promises: Rosa, Flor de Sol and Flor de Mar, the rose, the sunflower and the sea flower. It is 151 homes packed onto 6.3 acres, which is why three street names are enough to address all of it.
The village name is older than the village. Las Flores was a place on the rancho this city sits on long before any of it was built: Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, a grant of 133,440 acres made by Governor Juan Alvarado in 1841 to Pio Pico and his brother Andres. Juan Forster bought into it, and after his death in 1882 the ranch passed to Richard O'Neill and James Flood. Construction on the master-planned community began in 1986 on that ranch land, and Rancho Santa Margarita incorporated on 1 January 2000 as Orange County's 33rd city.
