How Old Dutch Haven was built
Two of these streets are named for weapons that barely existed. The Snark was Northrop's intercontinental cruise missile, and the first one reached its Air Force wing in Maine on 27 May 1959. The Thor was Douglas Aircraft's intermediate range ballistic missile, built by a company with enormous plants a few miles up the coast, and the first squadron went on station in England in 1958. County records put every home in Old Dutch Haven in 1959. The streets were being named in the same months the missiles were making headlines.
Dutch Haven was the first of the Los Alamitos subdivisions to follow Ross Cortese's Rossmoor, which had gone up immediately to the southwest between 1955 and 1961 and proved that families would buy here in quantity. Roughly one hundred and twenty homes sit on twenty eight acres, all of one vintage, on Cherry, Harrisburg, Pine, Reagan, Snark and Thor. Cortese went on from Rossmoor to build Leisure World in Seal Beach, so this small pocket sits between two of the more consequential pieces of postwar Southern California housing.
