            Royal Oak Park

Eleven acres beside the Coyote Creek Channel holding 99 addresses on two parcels, built in 1965.

            Overview

            About Royal Oak Park

Royal Oak Park is 11.1 acres holding 99 addresses on two parcels, which is the shape of a single attached development rather than a street of houses. The city zones it Multi Family Residential and draws no public street inside the boundary, so the addresses take their frontage from the streets around the edge.

It sits beside the Coyote Creek Channel. Three parcels on the south side of Cerritos Avenue east of the channel are surrounded by homes here and in Old Town West, and the Land Use Element concludes that residential is their highest and best use, citing the homes built next to them in 2013, access to the Coyote Creek bike trail and the high school. Los Alamitos has direct access to that trail at three points, one of them the northwest corner of Los Alamitos High School. Los Alamitos Unified School District covers the neighborhood, and the high school at 3591 Cerritos Avenue enrolls 2,809.

            History

How Royal Oak Park was built

Royal Oak Park is a small multifamily pocket of about a hundred addresses on eleven acres, and the county's oldest recorded construction here is 1965. That date puts it squarely in the decade when Los Alamitos went from a factory village to a city. Ross Cortese had just finished Rossmoor immediately north, three thousand four hundred homes behind a red brick wall built between 1955 and 1961, and the town answered with Dutch Haven, Rossmoor Highlands and then Suburbia, New Dutch Haven, Greenbrook and College Park North.

A touch and go field went in east of town in August 1940, the first military post in Orange County, and the Naval Reserve Air Base arrived in May 1942. Frank Vessels started match racing quarter horses on his own ranch in 1947 and held the first parimutuel meet in 1951. Los Alamitos became a city on 1 March 1960, and the census taken that April counted 4,312 residents.

            The Royal Oak Park lifestyle

The city keeps 18 acres of public park across four neighborhood parks and five pocket parks. Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue is the largest of them at 6.75 acres, with a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and a softball field. Coyote Creek Park opened in 2013 and turned a bare utility corridor into a 3.69 acre greenway along the Coyote Creek Channel.

Laurel Park runs to 4.33 acres on Bloomfield Street with a lighted multipurpose field and lighted tennis courts, and it has hosted the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League since 1974. The Aquatic Center, which the city leases and operates, is home to the USA Water Polo National Training Center and an outdoor 50 meter pool.
