            Los Alamitos, CA

            Greenbrook

A 35.2-acre neighborhood in northeast Los Alamitos where eight of the ten streets take their names from California counties, recorded on two tract maps filed the same day in 1966.

            Overview

            About Greenbrook

Greenbrook covers 35.2 acres, 181 parcels carrying 179 addresses on lots of roughly 0.14 acres, all of it zoned Single Family Residential. Ten named streets run 1.15 miles inside the boundary, and eight of them take their names from California counties: Humbolt, Kings, Lassen, San Bonito, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Shasta and Sierra, two of them spelled on the county's street file a letter away from the county itself. Marion and Myra are the other two.

No park sits inside Greenbrook. The city's Open Space Element counts it among four neighborhoods whose residents cannot easily walk to park space in Los Alamitos, and the remedy it sets out is a pocket park within a quarter mile of the neighborhood it serves. The city's 18 acres of public park are a short drive away, Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue the largest at close to seven acres, and Coyote Creek Park, opened in 2013, running a 3.7 acre greenway along the Coyote Creek Channel. Los Alamitos Unified School District covers the neighborhood and enrolls 603 students at Los Alamitos Elementary, 1,017 at Oak Middle, 1,031 at McAuliffe Middle and 2,809 at Los Alamitos High.

            History

            How Greenbrook was built

Greenbrook's streets are a map of California. Humbolt, Kings, Lassen, San Bonito, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Shasta and Sierra are all county names, and a buyer driving the loop is crossing the state from the redwood coast to the southern Sierra in about four blocks. Lassen and Shasta are volcanoes, Sierra is the range itself, and San Joaquin is the valley that grew most of the state's food. The same idea carries over into Woodcrest a short walk away, where Del Norte, El Dorado and San Joaquin continue the list.

The homes are of one generation. County records give a median build year of 1966 across about a hundred and eighty houses on thirty five acres, with the last few filling in through the 1970s. Greenbrook is part of the group of Los Alamitos subdivisions that followed Ross Cortese's Rossmoor, the walled community of three thousand four hundred homes he finished just to the southwest in 1961, and which convinced every other builder in the area that there was a market here.

            The Greenbrook lifestyle

The city keeps 18 acres of public park across four neighborhood parks and five pocket parks. Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue is the largest of them at 6.75 acres, with a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and a softball field. Coyote Creek Park opened in 2013 and turned a bare utility corridor into a 3.69 acre greenway along the Coyote Creek Channel.

Laurel Park runs to 4.33 acres on Bloomfield Street with a lighted multipurpose field and lighted tennis courts, and it has hosted the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League since 1974. The Aquatic Center, which the city leases and operates, is home to the USA Water Polo National Training Center and an outdoor 50 meter pool.
