            History

            How Country Square was built

Country Square is one of the smallest named neighborhoods in the city, about thirty six homes on seven acres in the northwest corner where Los Alamitos runs out and Long Beach begins. Farnham, Kaylor, Kinmount, Kyle and Maple make up the whole street list.

County construction years cluster in the mid 1960s with a median of 1964, and a few houses reach back to the 1930s. Ross Cortese's Rossmoor, three thousand four hundred homes behind a red brick wall, went up just southwest between 1955 and 1961 and pulled every other builder in the district along behind it.

            The Country Square lifestyle

The city keeps 18 acres of public park across four neighborhood parks and five pocket parks. Little Cottonwood Park on Farquhar Avenue is the largest of them at 6.75 acres, with a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and a softball field. Coyote Creek Park opened in 2013 and turned a bare utility corridor into a 3.69 acre greenway along the Coyote Creek Channel.

Laurel Park runs to 4.33 acres on Bloomfield Street with a lighted multipurpose field and lighted tennis courts, and it has hosted the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League since 1974. The Aquatic Center, which the city leases and operates, is home to the USA Water Polo National Training Center and an outdoor 50 meter pool.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Country Square

            How big is Country Square?

The boundary the City of Los Alamitos draws encloses 7.2 acres, making it one of the smallest of the sixteen neighborhoods the city numbers. The county records 34 parcels and 36 addresses inside it, on lots of about 0.16 acres, with a quarter mile of street across five names.

When were the homes in Country Square built?

Across three decades. The county carries a build year on all 34 parcels, the earliest 1936 and the latest 1966, with half of them 1964 or before. The two tract maps over the neighborhood are Tract 4642, recorded in January 1963, and Tract 5354, recorded in October 1964.

Where does Country Square's sewer go?

North, out of the county. The city records that wastewater from these streets discharges northerly into Long Beach and connects to the Orange County Sanitation District trunk line in Bloomfield Street. It is one of three areas the city names where the sewer is handled by a neighboring agency or discharges into an adjacent system, the others being El Dorado Park Estates East, served by the City of Long Beach Water Department, and Parkewood, which discharges south into Seal Beach.

Is Country Square in a flood zone?

The county's federal 100 year flood layer maps 12.6 acres inside the Los Alamitos city limit, and none of that acreage falls inside Country Square. Flood insurance requirements follow the federal map, so a lender is looking at the same layer.

            Which schools serve Country Square?

Los Alamitos Unified School District covers all of it. The district enrolls 603 students at Los Alamitos Elementary on Bloomfield Street, 1,017 at Oak Middle on Oak Street, 1,031 at Sharon Christa McAuliffe Middle on Cerritos Avenue and 2,809 at Los Alamitos High at 3591 Cerritos Avenue. All nine of the district's comprehensive schools have been honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools, California Distinguished Schools, or both. The district publishes no attendance boundary map, so confirm the assigned campus for a specific address with the district.
