About Apartment Row
Apartment Row covers 118.8 acres of Los Alamitos and carries 1,910 addresses on only 385 parcels, the ratio that comes with attached housing rather than detached homes. The city zones the whole of it Multi Family Residential, and Land Use Policy 4.3 names it with Old Town West and Old Town East as one of the three multifamily neighborhoods where Los Alamitos promotes coordinated property maintenance and improvement.
Two of the city's pocket parks sit inside the boundary. Labourdette Park covers 0.44 acres at 4401 Howard Avenue with a play area, a barbecue and a picnic shelter, and Sterns Park covers 0.29 acres at 3871 Farquhar Avenue with a play area and a barbecue. How Apartment Row was built
Apartment Row exists because Los Alamitos always had more jobs than houses. The Navy's airfield east of town became a Naval Reserve Air Base in May 1942 and the busiest reserve air base in the country during the Korean War, Frank Vessels turned his ranch into a quarter horse track from 1947, and the aircraft plants of Long Beach and Santa Monica were a short drive up the coast. County construction years across these blocks have a median of 1969 and stretch from 1908 to 2008, which is what a working rental district looks like on paper.
The street names are older than the buildings. Bloomfield, Green, Howard, Maple and Noel run through the district, and two small parks sit inside it, Labourdette Park on Howard at under half an acre and Sterns Park on Farquhar at about a third. Nearly two thousand households live on a hundred and nineteen acres here.
