How Laurel Walk was built
The neighborhood as it stands is a product of the 1990s downtown rebuild. After decades in the shadow of the Brea Mall, the city relocated a few historic homes, cleared blocks north of the Imperial and Brea Boulevard crossing and rebuilt the district, which opened in 2000. Laurel Walk is thirty-nine homes on under five acres beside that work, most of them built in the late 1990s at a typical size near 2,032 square feet, and a small number of much older addresses survive within the boundary.
Three sculptures stand inside these five acres, among them Sympatico by John Kennedy. That density of public art is not an accident: since 1975 Brea has required private developers to commission permanent outdoor work, reviewed before placement, and the collection now runs past 140 pieces, which is why a walk of a few hundred yards in this part of town passes more sculpture than most cities hold in total.
