How Windwards was built
The Windward Islands are the southern arc of the Lesser Antilles, and they carry that name because the trade winds in the West Indies blow east to west, which put them on the windward side of a sailing ship's route to the New World. The four streets here follow the ship: Conch Reef, Tortuga Cay, Lighthouse Point and Pappagallo Point.
Windwards was built between 1989 and 1993, townhomes of two and three bedrooms between 1,024 and 1,940 square feet, 187 of them on 16.1 acres. It went up as Aliso Viejo was filling out, a decade after the first homes in the city sold in March 1982 and a decade before the city incorporated on 1 July 2001 as Orange County's thirty fourth on a 93.3 percent yes vote.
