            History

How Sycamore Garden Condos was built

Sycamore Gardens was built on Newport Avenue in 1964 and holds a hundred homes. The name is a local one rather than a marketing one. When C.E. Utt started school here in 1874 the district was called Sycamore School District, and he believed it got that name because there were more sycamore trees around Tustin than in all the rest of the valley. Most of them are long gone.

The schoolhouse Utt walked into was a gift from Columbus Tustin himself, a little white building under a sycamore a few feet from where the Tustin grammar school still stands. Tustin, a carriage maker from Petaluma, had bought into the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana with Nelson O. Stafford in 1868 and laid out his townsite around 1870, giving lots away free to anyone who would build.

Citrus Ranch Park holds 16.9 acres off Portola Parkway, where the city keeps a hilltop gazebo and a lemon grove knoll. Cedar Grove Park on Pioneer Road covers 10.7 acres and carries a nature trail and a grass amphitheater.

Old Town repays a walk. The sidewalk tour along Main Street and its side trips runs a little over two miles past buildings that go back to the 1880s, and the Tustin Area Historical Society keeps its museum at 395 El Camino Real.
