How California Tesoro was built
California Tesoro means California treasure, and the ground it sits on was treated as one for a long time before anybody built a house here. This is the Plano Trabuco, the flat upland of the old Rancho Trabuco, held with Rancho Mission Viejo by James Flood and Jerome O'Neill from 1882 and grazed by their cattle for a century. The Portola expedition crossed it in July 1769 and left the plain its name when a soldier lost his trabuco, his musket, somewhere out on the grass.
The houses arrived in two goes, a first group at the end of the 1980s just behind the community's 1986 opening and the rest in the middle of the 1990s. The streets keep to warm, open Spanish: Calle Verano for the summer, Calle Fortuna for luck, Via Amor for love, Calle Bella for the beautiful one, and Calle Estero for the estuary. Calle Arcos gives it arches. It is single family throughout, on a plain that had been under one family's ownership for longer than most Orange County cities have existed.
