            History

How Classics at Lake Forest was built

The Classics carries the city's name, and the city's name is a piece of accidental history. Dwight Whiting, a Boston man who bought most of Rancho Canada de los Alisos in 1884, planted roughly 400 acres of eucalyptus near Serrano Creek as a lumber crop meant to draw settlers to a village he called Aliso City. The lumber business failed. The trees did not, and they were still standing, much denser, when Occidental Petroleum began building houses among them in the late 1960s and dug two artificial lakes to go with the forest.

The Classics is a compact community of 189 homes on 28 acres and thirteen streets, with a median lot of 3,535 square feet, the second smallest detached lot median of the fifty Lake Forest communities on this site. The city's build year layer puts it in the 1980s.

Lake Forest keeps 31 parks open from dawn to dusk. The Lake Forest Sports Park and Recreation Center opened in November 2014 on 86 acres, with 57 of them given over to sports fields, and the city runs the largest free skatepark in Orange County at Etnies Skatepark.
