How Lake Forest Drive was built
The street this community is named for runs past both of the lakes that gave the city its name, and both lakes are man-made. Occidental Petroleum built houses around them in the late 1960s, in and among the eucalyptus groves that Dwight Whiting had planted sixty years earlier as a lumber crop. Whiting's trees failed as a business and succeeded as scenery, and the forest plus the water became the two halves of the name the city adopted at incorporation on 20 December 1991.
This community is 189 homes on 22 acres and fifteen streets, with a median lot of 3,718 square feet, the fourth smallest detached lot median in the city. The build year layer puts it in the 1980s. Most addresses feed Rancho Canada Elementary, whose name is the rancho's, and the rest go to Lake Forest Elementary, with the whole community continuing to Serrano Intermediate and El Toro High.
