How Colinas De Capistrano was built
The name means the hills of Capistrano, and it points at the mission that started all of this. Rancho Niguel was carved out of Mission San Juan Capistrano's lands after Mexico secularized the missions, and Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted its 13,316 acres to Juan Avila in 1842, naming the rancho for Niguili, an Acjachemen village. The grant ran from Laguna Canyon past Aliso Creek toward Dana Point and San Juan Creek, and this boundary still straddles that split: 357 of its parcels drain to Aliso Creek and 123 to San Juan Creek.
Colinas de Capistrano is 467 homes across 152 acres in three pieces, and almost every one of its 24 streets is Spanish: Mira Vista, La Cumbre, La Cima, La Falda, La Pradera, Cresta Loma, Del Norte, Del Poniente, El Sur, El Oeste, Charreadas and Avenida Del Caballo. The city's record runs the years built from 1982 to 1994 with a median of 1984, and 187 homes carry 1985, so most of the community went up in about three years.
