            Huntington Continental

Twenty-six acres on streets named for English counties, and four hundred and forty-five homes all raised in 1963.

            Overview

            About Huntington Continental

Huntington Continental covers 26.0 acres measured against the city's published boundary and holds 445 residential addresses among the 462 the address layer records inside the line. Only one address carries a unit designator and the assessor classes all 445 dwellings as single-family residential. Eleven named streets serve them across 1.74 miles and the naming is English throughout: Keswick, Kingswood, Coventry, Cambridge, Claremont, Inverness, Cornwall, Argyle, Berkshire and Charing Cross, off Continental Drive.

The homes are the most compact on the register. The assessor's median building is 960 square feet on a median lot of 800, with a tenth to ninetieth percentile band of 864 to 1,254 square feet, and 400 of the dated structures are two story against 44 that are single. Thirty-one addresses carry a pool. City zoning and the general plan both read 77.6 percent of the ground as residential medium high density. The community sits outside the Coastal Zone appeal jurisdiction. Bushard Park lies within 250 meters, and the bus stop layer records ten stops within the same distance, among the highest counts on this register.

            History

            How Huntington Continental was built

Huntington Continental is a 445 home low rise attached community west of Brookhurst Street and north of Adams Avenue, and the county record puts every one of those homes in 1963. It runs a clubhouse, two pools, two spas, a basketball court and two playgrounds, though the city streets through it remain public, so the amenity gates do not make the whole neighborhood gated.

The street names reach for England, Keswick, Kingswood, Coventry, Cambridge and Claremont, on land that had grown lima beans, celery and sugar beets. The Newland House, built in 1898 for William and Mary Newland at the center of a 500 acre ranch, still stands nearby as the surviving trace of what all this was before.

Huntington Continental sits inside Huntington Beach Union High School District, and the district's own published attendance boundary places the whole community in the Huntington Beach High area. Census TIGERweb puts the boundary inside Fountain Valley School District rather than the Huntington Beach City district, which is one of four communities here in that position. The Fountain Valley locator, queried at three interior points, returned Oka Elementary and Talbert Middle at every one.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Huntington Continental

            When was Huntington Continental built?

In 1963, without exception. The assessor record carries a year built on all 445 homes inside the boundary and every one of them reads 1963. The single recorded map over the ground, TR 4416, was recorded on 28 February of that year.

            How large are the homes?

The assessor's median building here is 960 square feet on a median lot of 800 square feet, the most compact of any community on the city's association register. Four hundred of the homes are recorded as two story and 44 as single story.

            Which schools serve Huntington Continental?

Huntington Beach Union High School District's published attendance boundary places the whole community in the Huntington Beach High area. For elementary and middle school the boundary sits in Fountain Valley School District, not the Huntington Beach City district, and that district's locator returns Oka Elementary and Talbert Middle. All three interior points tested agreed.

Why are the streets named after English places?

Eleven street names serve the community and ten of them are English counties and towns: Keswick, Kingswood, Coventry, Cambridge, Claremont, Inverness, Cornwall, Argyle, Berkshire and Charing Cross. The eleventh is Continental Drive. The nearby Village Townhomes, recorded eight months later by the same surveyor, uses the same scheme and shares Keswick Lane.

            How big is Huntington Continental?

Measured against the boundary the City of Huntington Beach publishes, it covers 26.0 acres and holds 445 residential addresses on eleven named streets running to 1.74 miles.
