How Pinehurst Greens was built
Here the golf came before the houses. Coyote Hills Golf Course opened in 1996 to a design by Cal Olson with Payne Stewart attached to it, and the difficult part was never the golf. Olson worked four years to untangle hundreds of miles of pipeline, cut the number of live wells from 35 down to 15, hid what was left behind planting and screening, and set 2,500 trees and a run of holding ponds into a steep site. Pinehurst Greens followed in 1997, about 50 attached homes on Canterbury Lane and Oakmont Place reached off Brea Boulevard, built against the edge of the course that gave the association the second half of its name.
Canterbury and Oakmont are golf names rather than Fullerton names, picked for the same reason the place is called Greens, and they are the clearest thing anyone left behind about what this small development was meant to be. The city has not forgotten what is underneath it either. Nearly ten of the twelve and a half acres inside the boundary still carry a planned residential zone with an oil overlay written into it.
