How Meredith Manor was built
The corner these buildings face was one of the landmarks of the postwar boom. Orangefair Shopping Center opened in 1956 at the southeast corner of Harbor and Orangethorpe, a block from the front of the community, part of a wave of centers built directly on former orange and walnut groves. Those groves were what Fullerton had been known for. Charles Chapman bought an orchard on the east side of town in 1894, his Valencia oranges did well in the local climate, and the city ended up with more orange groves than any other municipality in the United States before the housing swallowed them.
The eighteen buildings here were finished in 1963, two story attached homes with detached garages, laundry on site and a shared pool, which was the standard package for that moment in Southern California. The homeowners association that runs the 160 units was created in 1973, ten years after the buildings themselves went up. Downtown Fullerton and the transportation center, where Metrolink and Amtrak trains still stop, are about a mile north.
