How Via Lomas De Yorba was built
The name translates as the way of the Yorba hills, and the hills are Bernardo Yorba's. He received the 13,328 acre Rancho Canon de Santa Ana from Mexican governor Jose Figueroa in 1834 and grazed cattle across this slope from the adobe he began soon after. The town that eventually filled it in was named by the Janss Investment Company, which bought the land from Jacob Stern and created the name in 1908, joining the ranching family's name to linda, Spanish for pretty.
Avenida del Tren is the giveaway street. It means train avenue, and the train was the Pacific Electric: its La Habra to Yorba Linda line was running by 1911 and carried passengers until 1938. The rest of the Spanish here reads more like a mood than a map. Avenida de Despacio is the slow avenue, Camino Caluroso the hot road, Via Verano the summer way, Via Bravo the fierce one, Vista Cantora the singing view and Vista Lampara the lamp.
