            History

            How Box Canyon was built

A box canyon is one closed at the far end, and the name is a plain description of the ground. This is the eastern edge of Yorba Linda, land that John Bixby bought from Bernardo Yorba's widow in 1878 and called Rancho Santa Ana. He ran cattle and sheep on it, and his daughter Susanna Bixby Bryant inherited the ranch after his death in 1891 and worked it for the next fifty five years.

The streets stay with the canyon: Box Canyon Court, Silver Canyon Road, Twilight Canyon Road, Sleeping Oak Drive, Woodland Avenue, Foxtail Drive, Lotus Avenue and Windy Circle. Box Canyon Park covers 9.7 acres inside the boundary with a playground, restrooms, a basketball court and pickleball courts, and just under a mile of city trail runs through, connecting into the network that reaches Chino Hills State Park, 1.9 acres of which fall inside this boundary.
