How Black Gold was built
Black gold is oilfield slang for crude, and here the name is literal. The city publishes 563 wells inside this boundary, all but four of them plugged, most of them operated by Aera Energy, with Olinda Fee Four the largest single lease. Nearly the whole community, 669 of its 674 acres, sits inside the state's Yorba Linda oil field. The industry that made this ground reached Orange County when Edward Doheny drilled the first well in the Olinda field in 1897.
When the derricks came down the land became a golf course. Black Gold Golf Club opened in November 2001 on 204 acres inside this boundary, an Arthur Hills design playing to a par of 72 at up to 6,756 yards, and the homes went in around it as the Vista del Verde plan filled out. Lakeview Elementary, named for the avenue it stands on, opened in 2005 in that same Vista del Verde community.
