How Avenida Adobe was built
Avenida Adobe means adobe avenue, and the adobe it remembers is Bernardo Yorba's. In 1835 Yorba began building his hacienda on the grant he had just received. It was a two story adobe of about fifty rooms, large enough to hold his many children, schoolrooms and the ranch families, and it stood as the center of local life until he died in 1858. Everything on this side of Yorba Linda grew out of that holding.
The streets are rivers. Feather, Kern and Truckee are California rivers, Potomac and Roanoke run to the Atlantic, the Mackenzie is Canada's longest, and Columbia, Clearwater, Whitewater and Cimarron fill in the rest of the continent. Portage Street names the carry between two of them. Around that run a set of ordinary American street names at Granby, Greenbriar, Millstone, Westfield and Todd, and Avenida de la Paz, the avenue of peace, holds the Spanish end together.
