            History

How Tustin Park Villas Condos was built

Tustin Park Villas was built in 1963 on Mitchell Avenue, a street named for Ralph and Johanna Mitchell, who set up their ranch and home in south Tustin in 1889. Their son Willis G. Mitchell later managed the Irvine Ranch. Three other condominium and apartment communities went up along the same short stretch of Mitchell within a few years of this one.

That cluster is not an accident. Between 1955 and 1965 annexation and tract building were the main business of the city, and the new streets across south Tustin took the names of the ranchers and early residents whose groves were disappearing under them. Nisson Road, Warner Avenue, Williams Street, Kenyon Drive and Utt Drive all came from the same practice.

Citrus Ranch Park holds 16.9 acres off Portola Parkway, where the city keeps a hilltop gazebo and a lemon grove knoll. Cedar Grove Park on Pioneer Road covers 10.7 acres and carries a nature trail and a grass amphitheater.

Old Town repays a walk. The sidewalk tour along Main Street and its side trips runs a little over two miles past buildings that go back to the 1880s, and the Tustin Area Historical Society keeps its museum at 395 El Camino Real.
