How Shadow Canyon was built
Shadow Canyon was built in 1992 on the canyon side of Tustin Ranch, a hundred and seventy homes on twelve acres. The canyon it looks toward is Peters Canyon, and that ground has a longer story than anything built on the flat below it.
Peters Canyon was part of Rancho Lomas de Santiago, a 47,000 acre grant made in 1846, and it was known before that as the canyon of the frogs for the water that drained out of it. James Irvine bought it in 1897 and leased it to farmers, one of whom, James Peters, built a ranch house and planted a eucalyptus grove that later gave the canyon its name. A reservoir went in during 1931, the Army trained troops in the eucalyptus grove during the Second World War, and the Boy Scouts ran a camp there from 1952 until 1988. The Irvine Company handed 354 acres of it to Orange County in March 1992, the year these homes were finished.

The city runs seventeen parks of its own. The largest is Veterans Sports Park at Tustin Legacy, 31.8 acres on Valencia Avenue with lighted ball diamonds and multi-use play fields, followed by Tustin Sports Park at 22 acres on Robinson Drive.
Citrus Ranch Park holds 16.9 acres off Portola Parkway, where the city keeps a hilltop gazebo and a lemon grove knoll. Cedar Grove Park on Pioneer Road covers 10.7 acres and carries a nature trail and a grass amphitheater.
Old Town repays a walk. The sidewalk tour along Main Street and its side trips runs a little over two miles past buildings that go back to the 1880s, and the Tustin Area Historical Society keeps its museum at 395 El Camino Real.
