How Windsor Village was built
Windsor Village went up in one motion. Almost every house inside the boundary dates from the 1960s, which places the whole neighborhood inside the decade Santa Ana grew from 100,350 residents to 156,601. Nearly every interior street takes the name of a Native American nation or word. Arapaho, Huron, Mohawk, Ottawa, Shawnee and Nakoma all run here, and it is Nakoma that gives Andrew Jackson Elementary its address at 1143 S. Nakoma Drive.
Fairview Street, which runs down the middle of the neighborhood, was pieced together from three older roads, the Old Newport Road, Berrydale and Greenville Street. McFadden Avenue at the north end was itself assembled from a road called Sugar Street and the original Fairview Street, and renamed for James McFadden, the pioneer who arrived in Santa Ana in 1868 and whose family lumber business out of Newport supplied the wood for many of the county's first houses.
