How South Coast was built
The Segerstrom family farmed lima beans on this plain for generations before turning one of their own bean fields into South Coast Plaza, with the May Company opening on February 21, 1966 and the mall itself following on March 15, 1967.
The houses filled in around those same years, 202 of them in the 1960s and another 421 in the 1970s. Bomo Koral Park, inside the neighborhood on MacArthur Boulevard, is named for Bohumil Bomo Koral, who managed one of Santa Ana's early women's softball teams in the 1930s and was later instrumental in building the city's park system.
