How Morning Sunwood was built
Morning Sunwood was still open ground long after most of Santa Ana around it had already filled in. The neighborhood's own build record shows almost nothing here before 1970, then 593 of its 619 measured homes going up in that single decade. The city's population had already climbed past 155,000 by 1970, and this stretch of ground was among the last still available to absorb that growth.
Segerstrom Avenue, which runs along the neighborhood's southern edge, carries the name of one of Orange County's best known farming families, who worked lima bean fields across this part of the county for generations before the family itself turned to real estate development in the 1960s, building South Coast Plaza a few miles away in Costa Mesa on land they had farmed. Segerstrom High School, just outside the boundary, carries the same name today.
