            Overview

            About Mid-City

Mid-City covers 324.4 acres and the county records 1,373 parcels and 1,311 site addresses inside the boundary, at a median distinct legal lot of 6,496 square feet. Thirty two named streets run 12.01 miles within it, among them Adrin Way, Dahl Ln, Jan Way, Joane Way, Kathy Ln, Lingan Ln, Doreen Way and Hesperian St. The zoning layer gives 187.8 acres to single family residence, 10.9 acres to community commercial and 8.9 acres to the Bristol Street Corridor Specific Plan.

The general plan carries 200.2 acres as low density residential, which is more than three fifths of the whole boundary. The city park and open space layers place no facility inside the boundary. Glenn L. Martin Elementary sits inside it on the city school layer, Santa Ana Unified covers all of it, and Lorin Griset Academy is 0.03 miles away.

            History

            How Mid-City was built

Mid-City sits on ground that was Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana before it was anything else, farmland under the same mustard and orchard cover that surrounded William Spurgeon's original townsite a mile or so east. The dates on the houses make the real story obvious: almost nothing here predates 1940, then 291 houses go up in the 1940s and 964 more in the 1950s, the two decades accounting for the overwhelming majority of everything standing today. That wave lines up exactly with what happened citywide. The Santa Ana Army Air Base trained servicemen here through the Second World War, and when the war ended many of them came back with their families to live, part of a surge that took the city's population from about 45,500 in 1950 past 100,000 by 1960.

One piece of that history is written into the neighborhood itself. Glenn L. Martin Elementary School stands inside Mid-City on West Wilshire Avenue, named for the aviation pioneer who put together an early aircraft in an old abandoned church at 200 N. Main and flew it eight feet off the ground for about 100 feet in August 1909. Martin founded an aviation company in Santa Ana in 1912, and though the company itself moved on and eventually became part of what is now Lockheed Martin, the neighborhood school kept his name and, with it, a direct thread back to the city's earliest aviation history.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Mid-City

            How big is Mid-City?

The City of Santa Ana draws it at 324.4 acres, with 1,373 parcels and 1,311 site addresses on the county record. Thirty two named streets run 12.01 miles inside the boundary.

            When was Mid-City built?

Almost all at once. The county carries a year built on 1,348 parcels here and 964 of them are dated to the 1950s, with 291 more in the 1940s. The middle year is 1952 and the range runs from 1907 to 1987.

What is the oldest map covering Mid-City?

The revised plat of the West Tract, filed in Orange County on 2 September 1890. It divides the land into three numbered lots and twelve lettered blocks, A through L, and half the present boundary lies inside it.

            Who did the subdividing?

            R. L. Loucks recorded five of the tract maps here between 1923 and 1927, including Tract 603, named Magnolia Place, in December 1923. Twenty five recorded maps intersect the boundary and none is later than 1958.

Are there parks inside the boundary?

No. The city park and open space layers place no facility inside Mid-City, and a park outside the boundary is not counted as belonging to it.
