            History

            How Centennial Park was built

The neighborhood is named for the park at Edinger Avenue and Fairview Street, 69.5 acres of city ground with a lake, ball fields, a skate park and the Dan Young Soccer Complex. What lies under the picnic tables is stranger than the park suggests. On June 6, 1941 the federal government bought the land at the southwest corner of Edinger and Fairview from William F. Croddy, a rancher who chaired the Santa Ana Planning Commission, and his wife Marine. What went up there was built to look like a farm and was not one. Twenty five antennas stood over roughly 110 acres, and the site worked as a monitoring station, listening to Japanese and German signals during the war and Soviet ones after it. When the government finally released the property, the ground was divided among Centennial Park, a Santa Ana College annex and the Heritage Museum of Orange County.

Most of the houses went up in the 1950s, with a second run in the early 1960s, on the flat ground between Edinger, Fairview and Harvard, while Santa Ana's population doubled from about 45,500 in 1950 to just over 100,000 in 1960.
