            Harbor Lane

23.51 acres off Del Obispo Street, 225 homes on nine streets the city maintains, recorded by Bauer Development Co. in two maps in 1972.

            Overview

            About Harbor Lane

Harbor Lane covers 23.51 acres reached from Del Obispo Street, and the city's address layer records 225 addresses inside the boundary, the eleventh most of the fifty communities on the city's register, across 249 parcels. Nine streets carry those addresses: Avenida Del Rosal, Avenida Pedrigal, Calle Del Tesoro, Calle La Fuente, Paseo Colonial, Paseo Del Amor, Paseo Del Lucero, Paseo Miraflores and Via Del Rey. None of the 0.9 miles of street inside the boundary appears on the city's Private Roads layer, because the recorded maps offered every one of them to the public. The zoning layer places 23.4 acres in the Specific Plan and Precise Plan District and the General Plan carries 18.3 acres as Medium High Density.

Four interior points were tested against the Capistrano Unified locator and all four returned the same three campuses. Kinoshita Elementary takes TK through fifth grade with 302 students at a 22 to 1 ratio and feeds Marco Forster Middle, which enrolls 930, and San Juan Hills High School enrolls 2,641 and graduated 96.2 percent of its class. The Fire Hazard Severity Zone layer places all 23.5 acres of the boundary in the Non-Wildland Fuel class.

            History

            How Harbor Lane was built

Harbor Lane was built from 1972, a year after Dana Point Harbor was dedicated on 31 July 1971, and the name is a piece of period marketing that turned out to be durable. The harbor was new, the coast road was busy, and a condominium on the San Juan Capistrano flats could sell itself on being ten minutes from a boat slip that had not existed five years earlier.

The water it points at has a longer record than the marina does. Richard Henry Dana Jr. described the anchorage in 1835 as a poor one, but through the 1830s and 1840s it was the port for the hide trade out of Mission San Juan Capistrano, the way this inland town reached the Pacific economy. Building the modern harbor in 1966 destroyed Killer Dana, the surf break that ran out of deep water onto the rocks, which local surfers have not forgotten.
