            History

How Newport Ridge Summit was built

A 1988 compromise set the terms for what could finally be built: more than 6,000 acres of continuous open space preserved, 1,600 acres released. The Summit went up quickly, about 150 attached homes between 1993 and 1996, and it remains one of the denser neighborhoods in Newport Coast. Annexation into Newport Beach followed on January 1, 2002.

The four streets are named for four historic provinces of France, and they were chosen well. Anjou is the Loire country. Auvergne is the volcanic middle of the country. Bretagne is Brittany on the Atlantic. Dauphine is the Alpine province whose ruler's title gave France the word dauphin for the heir to the throne. Anjou carries more addresses than the other three put together.
