How Casta del Sol was built
Casta del Sol is Mission Viejo's original age-restricted neighborhood, a guard-gated 55-and-over community the Mission Viejo Company built out between 1972 and 1987. It opened early relative to the rest of the master plan: the private Casta del Sol Recreation Center was already operating by 1973, and in 1974 the company opened a second golf course, also named Casta del Sol, to the public, an 18-hole layout designed by Ted Robinson. The community grew up alongside Lake Mission Viejo, whose construction began that same year, 1974, and which did not fill and open to members until 1978.
Shirley Hardin, one of Newport Beach's first female real estate brokers in the 1960s, later moved into neighboring Madrid del Lago and watched Casta del Sol go up and the lake fill from her own backyard. She went on to sell homes inside the community she had watched built, founding Casta del Sol Realty in 1996; her grandson Jeff Perrin runs the brokerage today. The neighborhood still carries the two threads from that era: two recreation centers built for an active retirement population, and the golf course that opened to the public the same year the lake broke ground.
