How Forest Gardens Mobile Homes was built
The forest in the name was planted as a crop. Dwight Whiting, a Bostonian who bought most of Rancho Canada de los Alisos in 1884, put in roughly 400 acres of eucalyptus near Serrano Creek as a lumber operation intended to draw settlers to a village he meant to call Aliso City. He also planted olives and grape vines. None of it paid, the dry ground and thin soil beat him, and the town that grew here instead was called El Toro.
Forest Gardens sits on 77 acres of Muirlands Boulevard and holds 494 homes on three ground parcels. The city's recreation layer records five ponds inside the boundary, more than any other Lake Forest community on this site, alongside a pool and a tennis court, and the zoning layer still carries a couple of acres here under an agricultural designation, a leftover from what this end of the valley used to be.
