            Baker Ranch

A 111-acre community in Lake Forest with 1,006 homes on the city's record.

            Overview

            About Baker Ranch

Baker Ranch spreads across 111.2 acres and 44 streets in the northern half of Lake Forest, the seventh largest of the fifty communities on this site. The city's address record holds 1,006 homes inside the boundary on 836 parcels, the fourth highest home count in the city. The city's land use layer gives 13.4 acres inside the boundary the medium density residential designation and 5.7 acres the low density one.

The city's pool layer records ten backyard pools, seven spas and 87 solar installations inside the boundary, and no shared pool at all, so solar panels outnumber pools here by better than eight to one. El Toro Water District supplies the water, street sweeping runs early Friday morning, and addresses carry both the 92610 and 92630 ZIP codes. Children are assigned to Del Cerro Elementary, Los Alisos Intermediate and Mission Viejo High.

            History

            How Baker Ranch was built

For most of the twentieth century the northern end of the valley stayed agricultural or industrial while the lake communities filled in to the south. El Toro became Lake Forest at incorporation on 20 December 1991, and the city kept growing outward, annexing Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills after a vote in 2000. Baker Ranch was one of the last pieces to be built out, and the city's build year layer puts the whole of its mapped housing footprint in the 2011 and later band.

Toll Brothers and Shea Homes built it, and the street names are a nursery catalog: Barberry, Belladonna, Calliope, Fuchsia, Heliotrope, Hyacinth, Jasmine, Juniper, Laurel, Lavender, Lilac and Magnolia, with Heron and Lark among the birds. More than a thousand homes sit on 111 acres across 44 streets, and the city's layer counts 87 solar installations against ten backyard pools, which is a fair summary of how differently a community built in the 2010s reads from one built in the 1970s.

            Lifestyle

            The Baker Ranch lifestyle

Lake Forest keeps 31 parks open from dawn to dusk. The Lake Forest Sports Park and Recreation Center opened in November 2014 on 86 acres, with 57 of them given over to sports fields, and the city runs the largest free skatepark in Orange County at Etnies Skatepark.

Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park holds 1,575 acres of county open space against the north edge of the city, and the city's trail map carries 49 named trails.

Across the whole city the general plan sets 3,756 acres to residential use and 3,065 acres to open space and parks, which is why so much of Lake Forest reads as green from the ridgelines.
