How Laguna Heights was built
Laguna Heights is drawn by the city in three separate pieces along Golden Lantern and covers 318 acres, and the city's record spans more than half a century, years built running from 1962 to 2014 with a median of 1987 and 344 homes dated 1989. That 1962 end is significant: Monarch Bay and Niguel Terrace, the first two neighborhoods the Laguna Niguel Corporation completed, were finished that year with 565 homes between them.
Before any of it, this was Rancho Niguel, 13,316 acres granted to Juan Avila in 1842 and named for the Acjachemen village Niguili, sold to John Forster in 1865 after the drought years and bought in 1895 by Lewis Moulton and Jean Pierre Daguerre. Fifty six streets run inside the boundary now, one cluster Caribbean, Saint Croix, Saint Martin, Saint Thomas, Curacao and Tobago, and another from the California surf coast, Doheny, Malibu, Redondo and Trestles.
