How La Vista was built
La Vista looks out over the El Niguel Country Club, and it was built in 1989, the year Laguna Niguel finally became a city. Incorporation came on 1 December 1989 after a fight with Dana Point over the coastal community of Monarch Beach that began when both filed to incorporate in December 1986. Residents there voted 61 percent to join Dana Point, Laguna Niguel's lawsuit failed, and the city was created as Orange County's twenty ninth without its coastal strip.
The Laguna Niguel Corporation bought in 1959 and had the Viennese architect Victor Gruen plan a town of 7,100 acres, and AVCO Community Developers took over in 1971. La Vista is at the end of that line: 281 addresses on twenty level acres at 442 feet, all of them condominium interests, on a single named street in the part of the city known locally as the Summit.
