How Hillcrest Estates was built
Hillcrest Estates is one of the newest gated communities in the city. The city's record runs its years built from 1988 all the way to 2007 with a median of 2001, and the busiest single year is 2003, so half of the dated homes here went up after the turn of the century, long after most of Laguna Niguel was finished.
Modern Laguna Niguel began in 1959 with the Laguna Niguel Corporation and the 7,100 acre plan Victor Gruen drew for it, passed to AVCO Community Developers in 1971, and incorporated as a city on 1 December 1989. Hillcrest Estates covers 90 acres, most of its streets coastal in flavor, Drakes Bay, Point Loma, Sea Point, Rockport Drive, Westport Way, Trinidad Lane and Marin Way, with seven tenths of a mile of the Aliso Summit Trail running through it.
