How Costa Brava at Rancho Niguel was built
The community keeps the rancho's name in its own. Rancho Niguel was 13,316 acres in the San Joaquin Hills, granted in 1842 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado to Juan Avila and named for Niguili, an Acjachemen village believed to have stood near Aliso Creek. Avila filed his claim with the Public Land Commission in 1852 and the grant was patented in 1873, but by then the droughts of 1863 and 1864 had already forced him to sell to John Forster in 1865.
Costa Brava sits directly across from Laguna Niguel Regional Park, which opened in 1973 on land the Laguna Niguel Corporation and the county assembled, and it was built in 1990. Every street through its sixteen acres is Spanish: La Montrosa, La Siena, La Serenata, La Triana, La Azteca, El Brazo, El Adolfo, El Alicante, El Mione, El Sorrento, Via Alfredo and Via Valdez.
