            Huntington Harbor Village HOA

Fifteen acres of manufactured homes on eight streets named for Hawaii, the only community of its kind on the city's register.

            Overview

            About Huntington Harbor Village HOA

Huntington Harbor Village covers 15.1 acres measured against the city's published boundary and holds 130 residential addresses among the 131 the address layer records inside the line. It is the only community on the city's association register whose ground is zoned Manufactured Home Park, and the assessor classes 122 of the addresses here as mobile or manufactured homes. No address carries a unit designator. The boundary fills 99.9 percent of its own convex hull.

Eight named streets serve the community across 0.92 miles and every one is Hawaiian: Lahaina, Waimea, Kohala, Napili, Poipu, Kailua, Makaha and Haiku. City zoning reads 99.9 percent Manufactured Home Park while the general plan designates the same ground residential low density, one of the few places on this register where the two layers describe the land differently. The community sits outside the Coastal Zone appeal jurisdiction. Harbour View Park and Humboldt Beach both lie within 250 meters, and the bus stop layer records two stops within the same distance.

            History

How Huntington Harbor Village HOA was built

This pocket sits on made ground. Everything around it was tidal marsh and duck club country until 1960, when Lewis W. Douglas Jr. of Christiana Oil Corporation began planning a residential marina across 860 acres of swamps and sloughs and hired the architect William L. Pereira to draw it. The Lomita Gun Club had been founded on these sloughs in 1903, and at least thirteen hunting clubs once worked the Bolsa Chica and Huntington Harbour wetlands. Construction began in 1963 and the yacht club opened in 1965.

Huntington Harbor Village came later, and all at once. Its 130 homes sit on a single 15 acre parcel just inland of the water, which the county dates to 1972. What gives it away is the street plan, because every street here carries a Hawaiian name: Lahaina, Waimea, Kohala, Napili, Poipu, Kailua, Makaha and Haiku. That was a common move for Southern California builders in the early 1970s, and in Huntington Beach it lands on ground with a real Hawaiian connection. The first documented surfing in Orange County happened at the dedication of the Huntington Beach pier in June 1914, when the former Waikiki resident George Freeth gave a demonstration of surf board riding.

            FAQs

Common questions about Huntington Harbor Village HOA

What kind of housing is Huntington Harbor Village?

The city zones 99.9 percent of the boundary as Manufactured Home Park, the only ground on the city's association register with that designation, and the assessor classes 122 of the 130 residential addresses here as mobile or manufactured homes.

How big is Huntington Harbor Village?

Measured against the boundary the City of Huntington Beach publishes, it covers 15.1 acres and holds 130 residential addresses on eight named streets running to 0.92 miles. The boundary fills 99.9 percent of its own convex hull.

            When was it built?

The record does not say. The assessor carries a year built on one address out of 130, which is far too few to describe the housing, so no year is reported here. The county holds no recorded subdivision map over this ground beyond the 1953 township survey sheet, which is usual for a manufactured home park held on a single parcel.

Why are the streets named after places in Hawaii?

All eight street names inside the boundary are Hawaiian: Lahaina, Waimea, Kohala, Napili, Poipu, Kailua, Makaha and Haiku. No other community on the city's register uses the scheme.

Which schools serve Huntington Harbor Village?

Huntington Beach Union High School District's published attendance boundary places the whole community in the Marina High area. Ocean View School District's published study areas return Harbour View Elementary for kindergarten through fifth grade and Marine View Middle for sixth through eighth, agreeing at all three interior points tested.
