            History

            How Lakeside was built

After 1910 the Bastanchury family turned the sheep range into citrus, planting roughly three thousand acres of orange and lemon trees on the hills northwest of town, a grove that was billed for years as the largest in the world. The lake was working equipment rather than scenery, a modest watering pond that became a water source for the groves. The family ran a school on the ranch for the children of the Mexican families who picked the fruit, and the pickers lived in six small villages of about thirty families each, scattered across the property. The ranch did not survive the Depression. By 1936 the land had passed to the bondholders, who reorganized it as the Sunny Hills Ranch Company, and that is where the name of this whole side of Fullerton comes from.

The 30 houses here came much later, on four short private lanes that all take the same name and all face the same way, Lakeview Circle, Court, Terrace and Way. The lake below them carries a local legend of its own. For decades people traded stories about something large moving in the water. When crews drained the lake in September 2004 for a restoration they finally found it, a hundred pound alligator snapping turtle the neighborhood had nicknamed Old Bob, almost certainly a pet that outgrew whoever bought it.
