How Shadow Lane Condominiums was built
One of the four streets here is Courreges, and it carries the best story in Fountain Valley. Roch Courreges was the son of Basque landowners, and he set off for California alone in 1867, when he was sixteen. He tried the northern gold country, got nothing out of it, and came south instead to run sheep, establishing a ranch in 1878 on eighty acres known as The Bluffs. In 1880 he married Magdalena Mogart and the two of them turned the sheep run into a farm.
The water tank his family built in 1898 is the oldest structure in the city. It stood at Talbert Avenue and Newland Street for well over a century, and in 2016, at 118 years old, it was moved to Heritage Park beside the library, a project his descendants and the historical society raised the money for. The other streets in this small group of 46 homes are Conover, Metcalf and Shadow itself, and the homes were built in 1985 and 1986, mostly three bedrooms, on under two acres.
