How Cameron Park was built
Cameron Park went up in 1975 as a townhome community of about 110 homes on roughly 11 acres, which makes it one of the denser addresses in a city built mostly of single story ranch houses. It sits off Humboldt Drive next to Smith-Murphy Park, with a pool, a spa and attached two car garages, and the homes are arranged so that most of them look onto green rather than onto asphalt. Four street names serve the whole community: Cameron, Humboldt, Mead and Muir.
Three of those four read as a nod to naturalists and explorers rather than to anyone local. Alexander von Humboldt and John Muir are the obvious pair, and Mead sits comfortably alongside them. It is a quieter scheme than the surrounding neighborhoods, where whole grids are given over to birds, flowers, presidents or generals, and it fits a project of the mid seventies rather than the mid fifties.
