How Bird Tract was built
Albatross, Blue Jay, Canary, Eagle, Falcon, Flamingo, Oriole, Pelican, Penguin, Pheasant and Robin. Eleven streets, eleven birds, and no attempt at consistency between a backyard robin and an Antarctic penguin. That mix is the tell of a mid century developer working through a theme rather than a naturalist working through a field guide. The result is a tight 41 acre neighborhood of roughly 205 addresses on lots close to a seventh of an acre, laid out on curving blocks rather than the older straight grid to the south.
The city itself incorporated on 27 January 1953, and neighborhoods like this one went up in the rush that followed.
