            History

            How Olinda Ranch was built

About 660 homes were built across eight neighborhoods between 2001 and 2004 at Valencia Avenue and Santa Fe Road, and the city counts 637 addresses inside the boundary with a typical house around 2,504 square feet and four bedrooms. Working oil derricks still stand in the common areas, a Southern California wildlife corridor runs through the community, and the Olinda Oil Museum and Trail sits inside the boundary at 4025 Santa Fe Road, built around a well drilled in 1898 with 1.9 miles of walking around it.

The street names tell the site's whole history in two lists. One is birds: Blue Jay, Cardinal, Condor, Falcon, Heron, Hummingbird, Lark, Mockingbird, Morning Dove, Owl, Partridge, Pheasant, Redtail, Roadrunner, Robins, Sandpiper, Skylark, Starling, Swallow and Woodpecker. The other is the railroad that made the field pay: Boxcar Lane, Trolley Court, Whistle Train Road, Railway and Santa Fe Road itself. Orange Grove Lane and Tangerine Place remember what came between the oil and the houses. A sculpture called Red Tail Hawk by Michael Stutz stands in the community, which closes the circle neatly.
