            Overview

            About Hollydale Mobile Home Park

Hollydale Mobile Home Park occupies 31 acres on East Carbon Canyon Road at the far eastern end of Brea, and all 138 of its addresses carry that road as their street, with 134 of them holding a unit designator. Inside the park the lanes are named for gemstones: Amethyst, Chalcedony, Beryl, Diamond, Emerald, Jasper, Ligure, Onyx, Ruby, Sapphire, Sardius and Topaz, running across 1.27 miles. The city's parcel layer records two parcels beneath the whole community.

The City of Brea's housing record names it Hollydale Mobilehome Estates and counts 134 mobile homes, one of the city's five parks alongside Bandera Estates, Crestmont, Lake Park Brea and Rancho Brea. The zoning is HR, hillside residential, across all 31 acres, and the general plan matches it. This is the most exposed ground of any Brea community: all 31 acres fall in the Very High fire hazard severity class and the landslide layer covers 27.3 of them, 88 percent of the site. Hollydale sits further from a school than any other Brea community, with Olinda Elementary 2.95 miles away, Brea Olinda High 4.2 miles and Brea Junior High 5.26 miles, all in Brea Olinda Unified.

            History

How Hollydale Mobile Home Park was built

The canyon had a second life as a spa. La Vida Mineral Springs operated in the Brea stretch of Carbon Canyon from the 1910s into the 1980s, bottling mineral water in a range of flavors and promising every kind of health benefit, and the Carbon Canyon Mineral Springs resort ran in Sleepy Hollow just over the county line in the 1930s and 1940s. Hollydale's 138 homes sit on thirty-one acres in the middle of that history, at the Olinda Village end of the canyon.

The streets are named for gemstones, and the list is not a jeweler's. Amethyst, Beryl, Chalcedony, Diamond, Emerald, Jasper, Ligure, Onyx, Ruby, Sapphire, Sardius and Topaz. Ligure and sardius are stone names that survive in English almost only in the King James Bible, where twelve jewels are set in four rows on the high priest's breastplate, and chalcedony belongs to the twelve foundations of the New Jerusalem. Someone laying out this park went to scripture for the street signs.
