How Chatham Village Apartments was built
Chatham Village sits where McFadden Avenue meets Williams Street, and both of those names carry the neighborhood's history. Williams Street was named for Albert C. Williams, who arrived in the area in 1874, and later for his son of the same name. Many of the streets in south Tustin were named the same way, after the ranchers and early residents whose citrus groves the housing tracts replaced.
This corner of Tustin was farmland until the early 1960s. The city's historical resources survey records that nearby land at Newport and McFadden was still in citrus when Tustin annexed 66 uninhabited acres there in March 1962 and rezoned it for housing. Apartment complexes went up across that ground over the next few years, in the decade when Tustin's population grew more than tenfold.
