            History

How Axiom Tustin Apartments was built

The buildings on Tustin East Drive went up between 1968 and 1972, in the middle of the decade that changed Tustin more than any other. Through the 1960s the city's population grew by 1,012 percent, reaching 22,313, and it was near 32,000 by 1970. The orange and walnut land east of Newport Avenue was being turned into apartment courts and shopping centers about as fast as crews could pour slabs, and this is one of the larger results.

The town those newcomers arrived in had been founded a century earlier by Columbus Tustin, a carriage maker from Petaluma who bought into the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana with his partner Nelson O. Stafford in 1868 and laid out a townsite around 1870. Lots sold so slowly that Tustin ended up giving them away free to anyone willing to build a house on one.

            Lifestyle

            The Axiom Tustin Apartments lifestyle

The city runs seventeen parks of its own. The largest is Veterans Sports Park at Tustin Legacy, 31.8 acres on Valencia Avenue with lighted ball diamonds and multi-use play fields, followed by Tustin Sports Park at 22 acres on Robinson Drive.

Citrus Ranch Park holds 16.9 acres off Portola Parkway, where the city keeps a hilltop gazebo and a lemon grove knoll. Cedar Grove Park on Pioneer Road covers 10.7 acres and carries a nature trail and a grass amphitheater.

Old Town repays a walk. The sidewalk tour along Main Street and its side trips runs a little over two miles past buildings that go back to the 1880s, and the Tustin Area Historical Society keeps its museum at 395 El Camino Real.
